Thank you all for sharing your experiences with Topomax. I was on it for 3 months and they were the most mood stable 3 months of my life besides my first pregnancy. I am 36. I have been off of it for about 6 weeks now. I stopped taking it because of hair loss. I have been experiencing hair loss off and on for about 3 years and it has been attributed to stress. It seemed to become excessive about 3 weeks after beginning the Topomax. I started to become very self conscious so I stopped the meds. I have also had cycle problems since about a month before I started the meds, cycling every 14 days instead of 28. I know others have experienced the hair loss as well. I began taking selenium and zinc and it seemed to lessen but not enough for my comfort, Then I began taking Biotin and it seemed better but then about 3 weeks after being off the meds with more stress I started losing more hair. The entire time I was on the meds I hardly even knew I had PMDD, only experienced a little crankiness and blues, no more than 2 days in comparison to the usual 10 days. Well yesterday after a very stressful week I started back on the meds. It is unbeleivable to me the image I see looking back at me from the mirror without the meds, I look so mean. I didnt look and feel this way when I was on the meds.I am hoping to give it another try and maybe with the Biotin I can keep my hair. Because of my age and cycle problems I am also going to have my hormones tested and see if that may be the cause of the hair loss instead of the meds. Topomax really allowed me to be the person I wanted without the negative moods and stress ruling my life. I really hope I can take it this time and not lose my hair.

I had read a lot about memory issues/situations in some forums regarding Topomax. I haven't been on it long enough to give more info on that yet, I did tell my husband a bit about it so he would be aware. I hope I don't notice anything, and I hope with my low dosage it won't occur.
Like I said this is the first time I feel COMPLETELY in control of my rage at ALL times and it is a great feeling.
That and the meds still let me be me and I have been on some that don't.

My husband and I will definitely keep a close eye on that part of the drug and my family and I are very close so they would start noticing something at some point too.

Many, many years ago, long before children when I was going thru my ups/downs and wasn't quite sure why, I did hit some times when drinking became my close friend. The one thing I turned too when I couldn't figure out why I was so up/down or just felt like crap and didn't know why. When I spoke to the doctor about that quite a while after, he did say my memory loss could be a result from 'those' days. I guess there are a lot of ways we can mess up, Arggg... Learning is the only way to feel better. :)

Well, that and waking up not feeling terrible!

Some people experience severe memory and cognitive problems on Topomax. It's a pretty well known side effect at this point, but I had a friend who took it a few years ago and she didn't know what was wrong with her and I guess it was really bad. Just want to give you the heads up in case it happens and you're not sure what is going on.

My biggest regret in having taken meds for so many years is my cognitive impairment. I don't know if mine is reversible or not. Just wouldn't wish my brain on my anyone.

I hope it works for you and that you find relief.

Hi Kristy,
Yes the dry mouth is a hassle, and you will carry around bottle waters 24/7 and I am not exaggerating. All of a sudden you will realize you just aren't drinking quite as much. Of course, noone ever said you could have too much water, LOL.

The tingly arm didn't last very long.

Oh yeah... the taste of chocolate and soft drinks will most likely turn you off of those. I used to have a sprite every once in a while, ICK! I also tried a choco bar before I started one month, Ack! LOL, I considered those good side effects. I had also read about those side effects at a forum with others who take Topomax.

And the side effects that noone wants to ask or talk about, the sexual side effects, LOL... I won't go into details, don't need too. I haven't had any problems. As a matter of fact I am not near as bad as I was for the full 2 wks before my period. It used to be that the full 2 wks were off limits, get away from me, let me be. I am down to about 1 wk now, which for me and my PMDD is AWESOME!

Good luck and keep us posted.
